A reminder of the resilience, strength and compassion our ancestors and the Earth embody. A few affirmations inspired by them 🤎

🌱 Remember that our ancestors walked the same earth we do. That while they faced their own struggles, they dreamt of a better future under the same stars that we do.

🌱 Remember that our love for the earth is as inherent to us as our love for family, chosen or by blood. That long ago, the earth was considered part of the family, deserving of love, respect, and reciprocity.

🌱 Remember that even if it isn't present in the day to day, there are others out there that hold immense ancient wisdom. That they carry with them the lessons of a past that was rooted in stewardship, and they can lead us towards a future of one.

ONLINE April 26: Wolves in Washington ~ Updates from WDFW and the Wolf Advisory Group

In this follow-up to last year's program, biologists with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Wolf Advisory Group will share an overview of the status of wolves in the state, provide updates on current wolf packs, and answer your questions.

Learn how to stay updated and get involved, as well as how the Washington Wolf Advisory Group is working to promote equitable, inclusive, and respectful dialogue and decision-making among diverse people. Their goal is to foster durable peace by transforming the root causes of social conflict and providing quality recommendations on wolf recovery, conservation, and management.

This year's program will feature the most recent info on wolves in Washington—last year’s attendees will appreciate the new content!

The North Cascades Institute’s, Environmental Learning Center is nestled on the shores of Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park Service Complex. If you are privileged to visit, work, learn, in this amazing landscape you would be rewarded with sweeping views of Diablo lake with Pyramid and Colonial peaks hovering above in the distance, seen in this photo.

The Environmental Learning Center offers an array of classes, school programs, job opportunities and learning for people of all ages. Before checking in at Base Camp Learning & Lodging

Before checking in at Base Camp Learning & Lodging this spring, be sure to stop at Diablo Lake Overlook. Near milepost 132 on SR 20 (just 4 miles east of our turnoff), is a roadside perch with eye-popping views of Colonial and Pyramid peaks in the southwest and Davis Peak to the west.

A sharp eye will spot the dam-top road you’ll cross to arrive at the Environmental Learning Center, tucked into the wooded shoreline of Diablo Lake.

Spaces are still available at reduced SHOULDER SEASON PRICING through May.

SPRING STEWARDSHIP WEEKEND // April 28-30

Following construction of the Environmental Learning Center, volunteer stewards helped plant 22,000+ native shrubs and trees throughout the campus to rehabilitate the long-used site. Years later, those plants are thriving thanks to continued attention from volunteers!

For this specially-priced weekend, you're invited to join the National Park Service and Institute naturalists in tending to our native flora and habitat. A variety of essential projects await us—thinning, mulching, invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, and more.

Your hard work will be rewarded with delicious meals in our lakeside dining hall, connecting with the Institute community, evening presentations and talks, and a comfy bed at the end of a day.

Although it’s still very much a winter wonderland in the high elevations, it’s official, spring has sprung! Officially the equinox was Monday around 2:24pm pacific time, but who’s counting.

With spring comes so many changes in phenology or the study of periodic biological phenomena, like flowering 🌸, breeding 😍, and migration 🦅, in relation to climatic conditions.

Jason Knight, author of The Essential Skills of Wilderness Survival will be in our virtual classroom to share knowledge and skills that will help keep you alive in emergencies and enhance your outdoor experiences.

Jason has been teaching wilderness survival skills since 1997. He is a cofounder and instructor at @alderleafwildernesscollege, one of the leading outdoor schools in the U.S. offering wilderness survival training to clients including the U.S. Forest Service, Seattle Mountaineers, and cast of Captain Fantastic.
