Beneath the hail,
fresh rhubarb leaves
pulse and bob.
 
This is just one poem we might be fortunate to hear this Thursday evening during our Nature of Writing virtual event with Bill Yake! 

Yake will discuss his newest publication, Waymaking by Moonlight, a definitive collection of his observant, thoughtful, lyrical, and startling poetry focusing on the natural world and humankind in the Pacific Northwest.

This Thursday join the discussion on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in outdoor recreation during the Earth Day 2021 celebration at the Nelson Institute for environmental studies-UW Madison. Moderated by James Edward Mills (@joytripproject), the panel includes @latinooutdoors founder José Gonzalez, Angelou Ezeilo, co-founder of @greeningyouth and Wisconsin Lieutentant Governor Mandela Barnes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you are looking for tips on the best places to see wildflowers, please join us Tuesday evening to hear Nathan Barnes discuss his latest publication, Washington Wildflower Hikes!

In this newly released book, Nathan and his brother Jeremy, expertly guide us through 50 handpicked routes to witness breathtaking seasonal floral displays as well as offer tips on wildflower identification, photography, seasonality and more!

Did you know black bears often scratch trees to mark their territory? And that they often flip over rocks in their search for insect snacks? So neat!

What is your favorite black bear sign?

Check out nps.org/noca for bear encounter tips, including reminders to:
🐻 Avoid startling bears
🐻 Make noise while hiking & hike in groups 
🐻 Keep dogs on-leash (dogs allowed only in the recreation area)
🐻 Remain calm
🐻 Do not run
🐻 Do not feed wildlife 
🐻 Fill out a bear sighting form afterwards!

These backpacking and canoe-camping adventures are for motivated 9th-12th grade students seeking a fun and challenging summer adventure in the North Cascades! 

🌲8 & 12-day field courses in North Cascades National Park and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, designed to connect students to the natural world while engaging in conversation about climate change and climate solutions.

🌲Participants will canoe, backpack, camp, and complete stewardship projects while discovering their unique leadership strengths, building an inclusive community with peers, and identifying pathways to a hopeful and sustainable future.

🌲No prior outdoor experience needed. Gear, food, and transportation from Skagit and Whatcom counties are provided.

Roger Arliner Young received her bachelors degree in 1923 from Howard University. She went on to enroll at the University of Chicago and earn a masters degree in 1926. Her paper “On the Excretory Apparatus in Paramecium” was published in Science making her the first black woman to be published in the journal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Young completed her PhD in Zoology in 1940 from the University of Pennsylvania at the age of 41 and went on to become the Head of the Biology Department at Shaw University and increasingly advocated for workers rights and racial equity through the NAACP.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Young pushed herself to accomplish great things, combating sexism, racism and the pressures of academia. Young, a brilliant pioneer in the marine biology field, struggled with oppression and isolation throughout her life. The Roger Arliner Young Fellowship honors her legacy with the goal of increasing diversity in marine biology.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
