What is your favorite black bear sign?

Check out nps.org/noca for bear encounter tips, including reminders to:
🐻 Avoid startling bears
🐻 Make noise while hiking & hike in groups
🐻 Keep dogs on-leash (dogs allowed only in the recreation area)
🐻 Remain calm
🐻 Do not run
🐻 Do not feed wildlife
🐻 Fill out a bear sighting form afterwards!

Black researchers activists, inventors & naturalis Black researchers activists, inventors & naturalists in STEM: Roger Arliner Young⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Roger Arliner Young received her bachelors degree in 1923 from Howard University. She went on to enroll at the University of Chicago and earn a masters degree in 1926. Her paper “On the Excretory Apparatus in Paramecium” was published in Science making her the first black woman to be published in the journal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Young completed her PhD in Zoology in 1940 from the University of Pennsylvania at the age of 41 and went on to become the Head of the Biology Department at Shaw University and increasingly advocated for workers rights and racial equity through the NAACP.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Young pushed herself to accomplish great things, combating sexism, racism and the pressures of academia. Young, a brilliant pioneer in the marine biology field, struggled with oppression and isolation throughout her life. The Roger Arliner Young Fellowship honors her legacy with the goal of increasing diversity in marine biology.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You may think of beautiful mountain scenery, rolling horse pastures, or a zoomed out view of a river valley. In our latest #mountainschoolathome lesson we’ll exercise our creativity and observation skills to explore external and internal landscapes, how they change over time, and how they can be connected.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Snow camping may be on its way out, but oh what a Snow camping may be on its way out, but oh what a year it ‘twas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Snowpack is above-average for much of Washington state, especially in the Cascades. Snowpack can be measured through the depth of water that would result if the snowpack in an area melted instantly - known as the snow water equivalent.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As of April 4 the North Cascades had a snowpack of 122% of the median between 1981 and 2010.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you get out to snow camp this year? What’s your favorite thing about winter camping? 🏔⛺️❄️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Black researchers activists, inventors & naturalis Black researchers activists, inventors & naturalists in STEM: Robert Bullard⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Robert Bullard is most commonly known as the "father of environmental justice" because of his book Dumping in Dixie, written in the 1990's, which became the first book to articulate the environmental racism experienced by African Americans in the United States.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bullard first became involved in the fight for environmental justice in 1979 when he served as an expert witness in a first of a kind lawsuit attempting to hold waste companies accountable for the contamination happening in Black and brown neighborhoods. Bullard helped conduct a study for the case entitled, "Solid Waste Sites and the Black Houston Community", which at the time was the only case study of its kind.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bullard's environmental justice activism in the 90's led him to become one of the planners of the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit in 1991. He is a well accomplished author, focusing primarily on the impacts of toxic waste in Black and other marginalized neighborhoods and cities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
