Happy International Mountain Day! International Mountain Day, creates awareness about the importance of mountains to life, highlights the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and builds alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.

This year’s theme focuses on the capacity and needs of its people through solutions for a sustainable future focusing on innovation, adaptation and youth.

🏔️ As we in the North Cascades know, mountains are places we should treasure. Mountains host about half of the world's biodiversity hotspots and 15% of the world’s population.

🏔️ Did you know, of the 20 plant species that supply 80% of the world's food, six originated and have been diversified in mountains: maize, potatoes, barley, sorghum, tomatoes, and apples.

🏔️ Mountains provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity, helping to sustain argiculture and supply clean energy. As the climate continues to warm mountain glaciers melt affecting freshwater supplies downstream & people.

🏔️ Glaciers in the North Cascades contribute about 6-12% of the summer streamflow on the Skagit River. Over the last century, glacier in the North Cascades have declined about 53%.

🥳🎉 There’s still much to celebrate! Celebrate the scientists, people, and organizations working on solutions and advocating for change in their local communities.

Happy Monday!

With the endless shades of winter grays here in Washington can come the winter blues. Here’s a throwback to a double bonus of a sunrise AND larches for that pop of color.

Put a bird on it.

🦆 During the winter months tens of thousands of snow geese, trumpeter swans and waterfowl grace the skies and fields of the Skagit Valley.

🦆 Skagit Valley farmland provides food and habitat for approximately 10,000 trumpeter and tundra swans, 100,000 snow geese and thousands more mallards and other ducks.

🦆 As well as providing food and habitat for migrating birds, Skagit Valley farmland provides sustainable and locally grown food for programs held at the Environmental Learning Center.
