Happy Monday! Here’s some mountain Monday trivia.

🏔️ I am a 6,610 ft. peak located on the western edge of the North Cascade range in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie forest.

🏔️ I’m named for a mining claim on one of my mountainous slopes

🏔️ You can scramble up my steep slopes to the summit and on a clear day get great views of Foggy lake, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker and Glacier peak. If you have the energy you could also climb my bud, Gothic peak.

🏔️ I am located on the ancestral lands of the Skykomish & Tulalip people

🏔️ If climbing isn’t your thing you can set up camp on a durable surface and just take in the view, like my little bear friend in these photos, of Gothic basin and Foggy lake located right below me.

Happy winter solstice, tomorrow!

❄️ The winter solstice will occur tomorrow December 21 at 1:20AM Pacific time

❄️ During winter in the Northern hemisphere the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun, resulting in fewer daylight hours.

❄️ The winter solstice occurs at the point when the Earth’s tilt away from the sun is at its maximum and the Sun is lowest in the sky, thus giving us the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

❄️ In the Northern hemisphere places like Seattle will have less than 9 hours of daylight.

❄️ The winter solstice is one of the oldest winter celebrations. Ancient people celebrated the winter solstice in a variety of ways, including lighting of Yule logs, offering gifts and decorating with greenery.

❄️ With the fewest hours of daylight and the official start of winter and end of fall, the winter solstice probably won’t be winning favorite day of the year, but each day that passes from here on out will have just a few more minutes of sunlight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did you know the North Cascades has the highest co $Did you know the North Cascades has the highest concentration of glaciers in the lower 48 states? 🧊 Glaciers in the North Cascades take a significant amount of effort to be reached as they are located in rugged and remote mountainous terrain. 🧊 Glaciers are a sight to behold due to their beauty, inaccessibility and history they hold, but more importantly they store water. Lots of water. 🧊 They are natural reservoirs and provide 25% of the North Cascade regions total summer water supply. During the dry months of June-September North Cascade glaciers release approximately 230 billion gallons of water each year. That water is used for irrigation, salmon fisheries, power generation and recreation. 🧊 The beautiful turquoise color of Diablo Lake is made by glaciers. Their immense weight grinding on rock as they melt, depositing small silt sized particles of rock or glacial flour into the lake. Those particles are suspended in the water and refract sunlight giving the lake its iconic color. 🧊 Climate change effects glaciers. They are retreating and becoming smaller. There are fewer glaciers in the North Cascades compared to 40 years ago. There are many people who make it their life’s work to study and inform the public about glaciers and their importance. The more you know, the more can be done to protect glaciers and educate people about their significance. Have you seen a glacier in the North Cascades?
