Happy Monday! Here’s some mountain Monday trivia.

🏔️ I’m a 7,189 ft peak that can be seen from the shores of Diablo Lake at the Environmental Learning Center along with my friend Colonial peak.

🏔️ I wasn’t built by the ancient Egyptians, but geologic forces during the Eocene Epoch and Pleistocene period helped form by shape that is similar to many of the structures Egyptians constructed.

🏔️ I’m located on the ancestral homelands of the Upper Skagit, Sauk Suiattle, Nlaka’pamux & Swinomish people

🏔️ I’m part of a group of peaks that form the northern end of a chain running south through popular climbing destinations including the Snowfield Slam.

🏔️ To get to my summit, the trailhead starts right off of highway 20 where you can hike to a lake named after me that has sundew plants, a carnivorous plant. After checking out the lake, follow the relentlessly steep climbers trail as it gains thousands of feet of vertical relief, cross a glacier and check out the views from the top.

A look at State Route 20 North Cascades Highway from above!

We recently posted that starting March 25 @wsdot had begun clearing highway 20. Hooray! For the winter, highway 20 is closed from milepost 171 at the silver star gate on the east side to milepost 134 Ross Dam trailhead on the west side.

Check out these photos from above to see their progress and get a look at a quiet wintry landscapes.

Get the family out of the house and into the sun with us at Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 13, from 2:30-5 pm at the @skagitymca. There will be games, educational activities, and healthy snacks, PLUS resources and info for families on summer programs in the Skagit/Whatcom area. Happy #WildlifeWednesday! You can tell this is an Anna’s hummingbird because of the way it is. Pretty neat. Here are a few more facts to help you identify one.

🪶 Anna’s hummingbirds are among the most common hummingbirds along the Pacific Coast. They live in a wide variety of habitats, including open woods, grasslands, forests, deserts as well as in urban areas.

🪶 The iridescent throat patch (seen here) of male hummingbirds is called a gorget. The Anna’s gorget extends over its head, and oddly female Anna’s have a tiny red gorget, while females of most species have none.

🪶 In their exciting courtship displays, lasting about 12 seconds, males climb up to 130 feet into the air and then swoop to the ground with a burst of noise that they produce through their tail feathers. 🤯

🪶 Anna’s hummingbirds normally have a body temperature of around 107 degrees Fahrenheit. When outside temperatures fall, Anna’s and many other species of hummingbirds enter torpor. Their breathing and heart rate slow, and their body temperature can fall as low as 48 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature warms, the hummingbirds can become active again in a few minutes.

🪶 Anna’s hummingbirds eat nectar from many flowering plants, including currant, gooseberry, manzanita, and many introduced species such as eucalyptus. They also eat a wide array of insects from understory leaves, streambanks, or caught in spider webs, plucked from the air, or taken from flowers.

🪶 Want to attract Anna’s Hummingbirds to your yard? Set out a hummingbird feeder, then mix your own hummingbird food using one part sugar to four parts water. Don’t use honey or food coloring.
