Lights out!! Lend birds a helping hand or perhaps Lights out!! Lend birds a helping hand or perhaps a helping wing by turning off your lights at night.

Every spring and fall, billions of birds migrate through the US, mostly under the cover of darkness. An estimated over one million birds flew over Washington state last night. This mass movement of birds contends with an increasing, but still largely unrecognized threat: light pollution. Light pollution harms birds, but you can help!

πŸ¦… Light attracts and disorients migrating birds. Turn off or dim non-essential lighting from 11pm to 6am every night (when most birds migrate).

πŸ¦… Light can confuse and exhaust birds making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings. Treat reflective glass to keep birds safe on their journeys.

Turning off your lights not only saves energy, but helps ensure that millions of birds lives are saved and they can complete their migration. Visit Birdcast.info for more tips and information on migrating birds and how to keep them safe. #LightsOutForBirds

Happy Monday, let’s do some Monday Mountain triv Happy Monday, let’s do some Monday Mountain trivia, winter edition.

πŸ”οΈ I’m located about 5.5 miles west-northwest of the town of Newhalem.

πŸ”οΈ I was named by Lage Wernstedt, the famous surveyor of the North Cascades in the early part of the 20th Century. Wernstedt was also responsible for the naming of Mt. Despair, Mt. Fury, Mt. Terror, Mt. Challenger, Inspiration Peak, and the "Picket Range."

πŸ”οΈ I stand 7,240 feet high and all my flanks are rugged. You can climb my northeast ridge which can be accessed from the Thornton Lakes trail. If you are successful at completing this challenging route, standing on my summit would be a real triumph. πŸ˜‰

πŸ”οΈ I’m located on the ancestral homelands of the Upper Skagit, Swinomish, Sauk Suiattle and Nlaka’pamux people.

Who am I?

In a few months the snow will be mostly melted out In a few months the snow will be mostly melted out of high elevations and early wildflowers could be beginning to appear in this magical place.

As warmer temperatures approach remember to #RecreateResponsibly. Rivers, streams and creeks will be moving fast and water levels will be higher from snow melt.

Snow bridges are more common as temperatures warm and snow begins to melt. Use caution when hiking on snow near water resources.

Use caution when navigating trails as they will not be completely melted out and it can be easy to stray off course.

Oh hey bird friend, almost didn’t see ya there. Oh hey bird friend, almost didn’t see ya there. Happy #WildlifeWednesday!

🐦 The white tailed ptarmigan, also known as the snow quail (uh, how cool is that), is the smallest bird in the grouse family and is snow-white in winter and twig-brown in summer.

🐦 They’re famous for being virtually invisible when they stand still against the windswept rocks, low shrubs, and snowbanks of their high-mountain habitat.

🐦They nest above timberline in the alpine tundra of western mountains, like the Cascades, and are the only birds in North America that spend their entire life cycle in these very high elevations.

Have you ever seen a ptarmigan while out adventuring?
